What comes next has already been acknowledged by all of us as the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade by a vote of 6-3. According to Justices Stephen Breyer, Elana Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor they say today’s ruling not only turns the clock back but it also “places in jeopardy other rights, from contraception to same-sex marriage.”
Justice Clarence Thomas wrote on Friday that the Supreme Court must revisit and overrule past landmark decisions that legalized the right to obtain contraception, the right to same-sex intimacy and the right to same sex marriage. Justice Samuel Alito took note of the concerns and dismissed them saying it was to start “unfounded fear.”
Samuel Alito can dismiss those concerns all day long, however that doesn’t dismiss the fear of many LGBTQ+ members. Since same-sex marriages are not explicitly mentioned in the constitution, all it takes is for a state to file charges against someone or to forbid them from participating in one for the Supreme Court to rule on the matter. Conservatives hold a majority in the Supreme Court therefore we are already know the result if that was to be took up by the Court.
Yes, it’s 2022 and we are still being governed by a Constitution that was made by those who owned numerous slaves. To be clear, the constitution is a living, breathing document. Why then, are right-wingers so scared to alter it to reflect modern society rather than that of 1787?
When it comes to the Supreme Court, the future is somewhat unclear, but abortions will always be possible. Many people are celebrating this day because they believe abortions will no longer be committed, although this is untrue. Many women will still get abortions, but they won't have access to as many effective and safe procedures. Every year, 25 million unsafe abortions occur. So why don't Conservatives look at that if they claim to be so "pro-life"? Simply put, conservatives are "pro-fetus," not "pro-life."
Following the shock announcement that Roe was reversed, numerous abortion facilities will stop offering abortions in the next days, and other states may criminalize abortion completely. Truth be said, some people wonder what can be done and it’s not much. There isn't much the President can do and there isn't much room for Congress to pass legislation to codify or safeguard Roe at this time. However that could change during November midterms, Democrats just have to push the message that their is a lot at stake.
To be clear, citizens now have much more power now that abortion is up to the states. Overturning Roe V. Wade it simply returns it back to the people of each state, so now you have a reason to get out and vote for state representatives.
